How to Enjoy a Fun and Safe Halloween with Your Dog
23 Oct 2024
Halloween is a wonderful time for humans, full of costumes, sweets, and spooky fun. But for our dogs, it can sometimes be a little overwhelming. Here at AATU, we know how important your furry friends are to you, and we want to ensure they’re part of the celebrations in a safe and enjoyable way.
So, we’ve put together some tips and tricks to help you and your dog have a pawsome Halloween!
1. Keep Treats Out of Reach
Halloween means one thing – lots of sweets. But many of the treats we enjoy can be harmful to dogs. Chocolate, sweets containing xylitol, and even raisins can all pose serious health risks for your pup. It’s best to keep your stash of Halloween treats well out of reach and remind any young children in the house not to share their sweets with the dog.
2. Dog-Friendly Costumes
Dressing your dog up for Halloween can be great fun, but it’s important to make sure your pet is comfortable. If you’re planning on putting your dog in a costume, look for one that doesn’t restrict their movement, vision, or ability to breathe. Make sure there are no small parts that your dog could chew off and swallow.
Before the big night, try putting the costume on your dog for short periods to get them used to it. If your dog seems uncomfortable or anxious, it’s better to stick with something simple like a spooky bandana.
3. Avoid Halloween Hazards
Decorating your home for Halloween creates a spooky atmosphere, but some decorations can be hazardous for your dog. Candles inside pumpkins can be knocked over by a curious tail, and fake cobwebs or small decorations can be ingested. Keep your décor dog-friendly by opting for battery-operated candles and placing decorations out of reach.
If you’re planning to carve pumpkins, keep an eye on your dog while you work. Although pumpkin itself is safe for dogs to eat in moderation, the raw stringy bits or large seeds can cause stomach upset.
4. Create a Safe Space
With the constant doorbell ringing, new visitors, and potentially scary costumes, Halloween can be stressful for some dogs. Consider creating a safe space where your dog can retreat if they’re feeling overwhelmed. A quiet room with their favourite bed, a few toys, and their favourite bowl of AATU kibble can help them feel more secure. You might also want to play some calming music to drown out the noise from outside.
If your dog is particularly anxious, it’s a good idea to skip the trick-or-treating altogether. Staying indoors with them can prevent unnecessary stress and keep them safe.
5. Keep Your Dog on a Lead
If you’re taking your dog out for a Halloween walk or joining in with the trick-or-treating, it’s best to keep them on a lead. Even the most well-behaved dog might get spooked by unusual costumes, loud noises, or large groups of people. Keeping your dog close ensures they stay safe and don’t run off in fright.
Consider walking your dog earlier in the evening, before the trick-or-treaters start making their rounds. This way, they can get their daily exercise in a more peaceful environment.
6. Reflective Gear for Night-Time Walks
As the nights get darker, it’s important to ensure you and your dog are visible on walks. A reflective collar, harness, or lead can help drivers and cyclists see you in low light. You could also use a light-up dog collar for added visibility.
Safety always comes first, so make sure you’re prepared before heading out on any evening adventures.
7. Stay Calm and Have Fun
Dogs are very good at picking up on their owner’s emotions. If you’re feeling stressed or anxious about Halloween, your dog is likely to feel the same. Try to remain calm and make Halloween a positive experience for your dog. Reward them with treats and praise for staying calm around costumes or trick-or-treaters.
A few extra belly rubs or some playtime with their favourite toy can go a long way in reassuring your dog that everything is okay.
Halloween should be fun for everyone, including your four-legged friend. By following these simple tips, you can ensure your dog has a safe and enjoyable time during the spooky season.
Wishing you and your dog a very happy (and safe) Halloween from all of us at AATU!
