Preparing Your Dog for Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night is an exciting tradition filled with dazzling fireworks and celebrations, but for our furry friends, it can be a night of confusion and anxiety. Here at AATU, we’re dedicated to helping you care for your pet, which means keeping them safe, comfortable, and calm when those unexpected booms and flashes appear.

In this blog, we’ll share our top tips to ensure Bonfire Night is a safe and stress-free experience for your dog.

1. Create a Safe Haven at Home

Dogs can be spooked by loud, unpredictable sounds, so it’s essential to provide them with a cozy space where they can retreat and feel secure. Prepare a quiet area in your home where your dog can escape the noise if needed. Here are some ways to make their sanctuary cosy and comforting:

  • Make It Comfortable: Use their favourite blankets and add a few toys for familiarity.
  • Noise Dampening: Drape blankets over the area to help reduce external sounds and dim any flashing lights.
  • Add Familiar Scents: A comforting scent, like a piece of your clothing, can help your dog feel reassured.

If possible, keep your dog in a room with minimal windows to avoid any flashes or sounds from outside.

2. Pre-Bonfire Exercise

An exercised dog is generally a happier, more relaxed dog. Before Bonfire Night festivities kick off, take your dog on an extended walk or engage in some active play to help burn off any extra energy. This will leave them feeling calm and tired, making it easier for them to rest when the fireworks start.

  • Timing Is Key: Walk your dog before dusk to avoid exposure to any early fireworks.
  • Mental Stimulation: Alongside physical exercise, activities like training games or puzzle toys can help tire them out mentally, adding to their sense of calm.

3. Provide Soothing Sounds

The sudden bangs of fireworks can be overwhelming for dogs, but using white noise or calming music can create a distraction from the sounds. There are specific “dog-friendly” music playlists available, or you can simply use a radio or TV to mask outside noises.

4. Consider Calming Supplements

If your dog experiences heightened anxiety during fireworks, calming supplements may help them feel more relaxed. Here at AATU, we believe in natural solutions whenever possible, so consult your vet for recommendations on supplements or oils with ingredients like chamomile or valerian root. These can be given as treats or mixed into their food.

5. Be a Calming Presence

Your dog takes many cues from you, so stay calm and act as a reassuring presence. If you can, try not to react to loud noises or show signs of concern. Petting your dog gently and speaking in a soothing tone can help them feel secure. Avoid fussing too much over them, as this may reinforce anxious behavior.

6. Keep Mealtimes Regular

While their routine may be disrupted by Bonfire Night activities, sticking to familiar feeding times can provide comfort. Giving your dog a delicious meal, like their favourite AATU flavour, can also create a positive association with the evening. A full belly may help them feel content and ready for rest.

7. Plan for Safety

It’s always best to be prepared. Here are a few final precautions to keep your dog safe during Bonfire Night:

  • Check ID Tags and Microchips: In case your dog gets frightened and manages to slip outside, updated identification will make it easier to get them home safely.
  • Close All Doors and Windows: Dogs can bolt when they’re scared, so ensure doors, windows, and gates are securely closed.
  • Stay Indoors Together: Resist the temptation to take your dog to a fireworks display, as the unfamiliar surroundings and loud sounds can be terrifying.

Bonfire Night may be fun for us, but it’s important to remember how different it can feel for our pets. By preparing ahead, you can help your dog feel secure, calm, and reassured.

Wishing you and your dog a safe and peaceful Bonfire Night! 🐾
